How Giving Back Is Good For Business

Giving backBy Kelly Scholls, CPI Plumbing and Heating, Mount Vernon, WA

How many of us take our communities and the beautiful places we live for granted?

For years all I was concerned with was trying to make money, run my company and raise my family. Sure, I would go to the occasional fundraiser or support my daughter & friends youth sports & activities, but I was never fully engaged. Nor did I recognize the important of really supporting the community that I live, work and raise my family in.

Over the last few years and a couple major life changing events I have realized how important it is for me, the company and the community to be giving back. And so we made it intentional.

One of the things we started at CPI Plumbing is our CPI Charity club. Every month we take 1% of ALL our revenue and set it aside to be donated back to the community. 50% of it goes to our Golden Wrench Award Winner (employee of the month), for them to donate to their favorite charity in their name. The other 50% is spread out to other local charities in the name of the company.

When I got together with 3 friends and decided to do a hike in the beautiful Chuckanat Mountain Range of the Pacific Northwest, we never imagined what that hike would become. We had committed to hiking to 7 lakes in 7 hours, which is more than 20 miles. That hike has turned into a major fundraiser for the new cardiac rehabilitation center named after my late wife at Skagit Valley Hospital. We made a commitment to raise $100,000 in 5 years.

I used my and my late wife's positions as a well-known business owners in the community to gain support. The support and donations to this cause have been unbelievable and it shows just what a great community that we live and work in.

The appreciation and thanks we get from customers and the people of the community for the support that CPI, our team members and myself do by giving back to the community is overwhelming.

Give back and support your community.
