Protect Your Company’s Brand In The World Of Social Media

With the end of the school year here and having a daughter still in high school and many friends with graduating seniors this year, the last couple weeks have been all about graduations and graduation parties.

One thing my daughters wanted to do to honor their mother after she passed away was to have a scholarship fund in her name available to any graduating seniors from her alma mater as well as my daughters school, which are cross town rivals.

I’ve attended many graduations, scholarship assemblies, and graduation parties over the last couple weeks and connected with a lot of people. I was surprised by the number of times I heard, “I see your advertising and trucks everywhere, and see you guys all over Facebook.” Even though I am not a big social media person I realize the importance of it and the positive or negative effect it can have on your company.

 

Here are two very different stories of how social media can impact your brand.

  • As I was attending one of the graduation functions, I had a friend introduce me to a lady and her 16 year old daughter. As I was talking with them, the daughter was looking at me kind of funny and eventually asked her mom if I was the CPI guy; she said she had seen me in our TV commercial and on Facebook. They thanked me for supporting the seniors through the scholarship fund and for all the support that CPI provides for the community.
  • While attending another function with one of my friends, who manages a nearby a tire store, he and I were having a conversation with another lady and her husband about business and life. She started ranting about the manager for the tire store in her town. She did not have one good thing to say about him and what he posts on his Facebook page. She said she would never go into that store as long as he was the manager because of the image he conveys on Facebook.

 

Whether you do social media, or your team members take the time to stay updated with Facebook and Twitter, make sure you are all representing your company and brand in a positive way. Your image online should align with how you want to be represented and respected in your community. Talk to your team about the impact that their person brand has on the company's image and brand. Most people won't realize how important their social media presence is to the image of the company they work for.

Always remember you never know who is paying attention to you and your team.
