Why New Year’s Resolutions are a JOKE

Yes! It's that time of year once again when the calendar and some long lost fallacy tells us that it's the time to set a life altering goal that will change the course of our lives forever...in the form of a New Year's Resolution!

Really? Please!!

Part of me said I wasn't going to write about this topic this week, but I guess my alter ego won out on topic choice this week. Late last week I was doing a live technician training event for an incredible company in our industry and this topic came up (because I wanted to explore it) 🙂

I quickly pose the question to the team I'm training, "Why don't New Year's Resolutions work?" I realize I might have opened a can of worms as the energy appears to increase in the room (at 7am in a plumbing shop)!

A couple guys shout out that resolutions DO work, but you've got to put some time into coming up with them. Okay, I get it, tell me more...

They go on to tell me that a well thought out New Year's Resolution with a strong enough emotional reason for it, along with a time line for creating the change, and a plan to accomplish the desired result will always work as a resolution!

Wow! I'm dumbfounded! I'm elated! I'm super stoked about what I just heard. And I couldn't agree more with that particular recipe...however that exact recipe and 99.9% of resolutions never cross paths. What these very astute technicians just had recited to me was a great goal setting process (in disguise as a resolution)!

New Year's Resolutions absolutely DO NOT WORK!

Why? Because most of them are decided out of obligation, what the calendar says, peer pressure, and so many other weak reasons. A real resolution is a goal. Let's agree to call it what it is! Let's stop trying to utilize "softeners". (I talk about this a lot in my book The Six Dimensions of C.H.A.N.G.E.)

Why do we feel compelled to wait for a certain date on the calendar to create positive change in our situation? If it's time for a change then by gosh let's create the necessary change immediately! Resolutions are a fad. They're created and discussed by the part of society that doesn't create what you and I create!

We've got to play a different game than the masses play. This has become even clearer over the last several years as well as the government direction of most powerhouse nations at the moment.

Regardless of the time of year or the day on the calendar, decide this year to set a quality goal. If you need help or assistance, let me know as this is a topic near and dear to my heart! Have an incredible 2013!

Have a great New Year!!!
